Environment

A sustainable business offering sustainable products, Ecobags™ is founded on strong ethical and environmental values. Our company was created as a response to the growing concern of plastic bag use.

New Zealanders use almost one billion plastic bags each year - about 200 bags per head. Plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose and litter our landscapes and waterways. They threaten our wildlife and marine life and release toxic gases when burnt.

Consumer Research On Plastic Bag Use
  • Two-thirds of New Zealanders always accept free plastic shopping bags
  • 80% believed supermarkets should do more to reduce use of plastic bags
  • 56% of respondents deemed handing out plastic bags in supermarkets unnecessary

We are EPI Certified, BSCI Certified and certified in ISO 9001. We use eco-friendly, non-toxic inks, reuse our own plastic and carton packaging from shipments overseas and have minimised energy use in our operations.

To offset our carbon footprint we developed a unique partnership with Motutapu Restoration Trust called MyBagCares. The concept is simple - buy a cotton bag at MyBagCares and we will plant a tree on Motutapu Island. This will help restore the native flora and fauna at Motutapu, preserve Maori archaeological sites, and return the land to its lush, vegetative state.

Ethical Trading Practice

We have high expectations of our suppliers and manufacturers abroad and in New Zealand to ensure they are doing business with a high respect for their employees. We audit our suppliers ourselves and expect them to adhere to the following principles of ethical trading:

  • Safe and Hygienic working conditions
  • Reasonable working hours and fair wages
  • Abuse or other forms of intimidation shall be prohibited
  • Intellectual property rights shall be respected
